Jesus and Homosexuality

On May 20, 2012, Chris Anderson preached a sermon titled Jesus and Homosexuality. Anderson is refreshingly biblical in both his content and spirit as he addresses this difficult issue. The sermon is a bit long (clocking in at 62 minutes), but Anderson uses that time effectively and covers an impressive amount of material. Here are a few highlights.

“Contrary to the teaching of our age, Jesus would not consent to be the best man in a gay wedding nor would Jesus show up at that wedding holding a sign about God hates those people. Both sides of this debate, when there are those who say Jesus is fine with it, they are trying to create a god in their own image, and when people show up and they hold signs about God hating homosexuals, they are trying to make a god in their image as well. And we need to find God as he has revealed himself in the Scriptures” (10:50-11:33).

The Bible Condemns Homosexuality Along with Every Other Sin

“We are opposed to sin, and today we are zeroing in on the topic of homosexuality” (14:35-44).

The Old Testament Teaching on Homosexuality

In Gen 1:26-28; 2:22-25, God establishes the home, cf. Matt 19:3-6. In Gen 19:1-11, 24-25, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for homosexuality and other sins. In Ex 20, God forbids Adultery. In following commands, God unpacks the general concept of adultery to include all sexual sin including homosexuality.

Lev 18:22 is a clear description of God’s opinion of homosexuality. Remember this description is in a passage showing God’s displeasure with many other sins. We should not overlook this passage just because the Mosaic Law contains ceremonial laws. Note that Lev 20:13 made homosexuality a capital offense. See also Deut 23:17-18 in the context of prostitution. “God is opposed to sin, including homosexuality” (32:27-31).

The New Testament Teaching on Homosexuality

Rom 1:18-32, We might be tempted to argue that some of these sins don’t fit in Paul’s list. However, “all sin is shocking to God.” Paul doesn’t present homosexuality as the ultimate shocking sin. We should be serious about all sin (37:44-40:36).

1 Tim 1:8-10, “Is Paul condemning homosexuality? Undeniably he is—along with every other sort of sin—and he actually says ‘I’m just giving some illustrations.’ But all sin is scandalous to God. So what I’m saying is: don’t smugly say God is opposed to homosexuality,…[God is opposed to pornography, immorality, pride, and hate.] All sin is gross to God.” (41:34-44:05) We must confront homosexuality condemned in 1 Tim 1:8-10 with the spirit of 1 Tim 1:15 (“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief”).

Jesus’ Teaching on Homosexuality

Jesus affirmed OT law and its morality (Matt 5:17-20). If you don’t like Moses, you don’t like Jesus because Jesus held Moses in high regard (Matt 23:1-3). Jesus intensified OT morality (Matt 5:21-28). Jesus fulfilled the law and OT morality (John 5:46-47). Jesus is the personification of the law. He is totally consistent with the law. Jesus condemned all sorts of sin. In Matt 19:4-6 Jesus presents marriage as being between a man and a woman.

In Matt 15:18-20 Jesus said that our sinfulness of all kinds comes from the heart. We may have genetic dispositions to certain kinds of sins, but we are naturally inclined to sin in general. Our natural inclinations do not justify sin. Furthermore, Jesus called Paul and the other apostles. We should not try to pit their teachings against each other.

Everyone Needs a Solution for Sin

According to 1 Cor 6:9-11, sin is a problem for us all. Sin keeps us out of the kingdom of God. Every sinner is condemned, every sinner can be forgiven, and every sinner can be transformed. Homosexuals can be saved and changed. This is not hate; this is hope.
